Israel closing Rafah: A death sentence for thousands of ill and wounded

The stories of three people who desperately need to leave Gaza for treatment and the dark future they face

11-year-old Yassin al Ghalban lies in a hospital bed at the European Hospital in Rafah. He is suffering from a serious heart condition and needs urgent surgery that is not available in Gaza. His father, Mohammed, has been trying to get him a permit to leave for treatment in Israel, but so far his requests have been denied. "I am so worried about my son," Mohammed said. "He is getting worse every day, and I don't know how much longer he can last."

Rehab Abu Daqqa is a mother of three young children. Her husband was killed in an Israeli airstrike two years ago, and she has been struggling to support her family ever since. Her youngest child, 2-year-old Ahmed, has a rare genetic disorder that requires specialized treatment that is not available in Gaza. Rehab has been trying to get a permit to take Ahmed to Egypt for treatment, but so far her requests have been denied. "I am so desperate," Rehab said. "I don't know what to do. I just want my son to have a chance to live."

16-year-old Hala Abu Jazar is a volunteer with the Palestinian Red Crescent Society. She has been working tirelessly to help the victims of the Israeli airstrikes. She has seen firsthand the devastating impact of the attacks on children. "I have seen children who have lost their limbs, children who have been burned, and children who have been traumatized," Hala said. "These children need urgent help, and they need to be able to leave Gaza for treatment."
